Motorbike Rules in Thailand

Drivers Licence

A valid drivers licence is required to operate a motor vehicle in Thailand.
The easiest way to comply is to obtain an International Driving Permit in your home country. These usually do not cost much are are typically valid for one year or more.
Another option is to obtain a Thai drivers licence. This is not difficult, however, in most cases it may require a full day to complete formalities, written test and driving test.
If you are visiting for a relatively short period the most practical way is the International Driving Permit. If you do choose to obtain a Thai drivers licence there are some extra benefits, such as discounts to Thai attractions and certain theaters & events.

Helmet Laws

Wearing a helmet when riding a motorbike is obligatory. The fines for not wearing one are minor, but usually will cause a disruption in your day as the police will generally take your keys, ask you to go to the station to pay and return with a receipt.
Thai police often setup checkpoints throughout the city so chances you will be stopped is high.

Insurance

All bikes rented from Hallmark Motorbike Rental comes with minimum liability insurance and no insurance on the bike itself.
In Thailand there simply is no practical way to obtain excess insurance on motorbikes. Renters as such are responsible for any damage to the bike as well as other liability claims in excess of the insurance included.
